Aitutaki; a Dream Destination

Aerial of the Island of Aitutaki

Aitutaki, Cook Islands, is like a slice of heaven on earth and may be one of the South Pacific’s best-kept secrets. Located one hour from Rarotonga International airport on a daily flight, is the ultimate place to go for a romantic escape. If you’re after clear turquoise lagoons, palm-fringed beaches, a relaxed ambience and beautiful resorts, this is the place for you.

1. Staying on Atutaki makes you feel like you are on your own private island. The small island does not experience mass tourism and the beaches are never crowded. Depending on where you stay, it’s possible you may not see another tourist your entire stay!

2. Get your Passport Stamped at “One Foot” island. There’s no better way to experience Aitutaki than a full day lagoon cruise. Spend the day snorkelling and swimming in the pristine waters and visit one-foot island (known as Tapuaetai), a small islet in the south-east of the beautiful turquiose lagoon, here you can get your passport stamped at the local post office. It is known for having the best views of the Aitutaki lagoon and depending on the tide.

3. Watch the Sunset. The Aitutaki sunset can be enjoyed anywhere on the island, and guests particularly love the view from Samade Restaurant. The beachfront restaurant overlooks a motu and has an island style ambience. On the menu you’ll find fresh fish from the lagoon, or a rack of lamb straight from New Zealand as well as a variety of cocktails and wines.

4. Accommodations. There are some beautiful resorts in Aitutaki to suit all travellers needs. Stay at Tamanu Beach Resort, a boutique property with on 23 bungalows situated in lush gardens or near the waters edge, alternatively you can stay in a traditional Overwater Bungalow at Aitutaki Lagoon Resort, or stay at the only 5 star property located in Aitutaki, in a stunning beachfront bungalow at the Pacific Resort Aitutaki.
