Goway Destination Expert Offers Update on Travelling to Thailand
Elyse Perciasepe, one of our top sales people at Goway Asia, recently travelled to Thailand with our partners from the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Below, she recounts her experience and shares tips to help your clients’ vacation to this beautiful part of Southeast Asia.
What do you think is the biggest misconception about Thailand?
That travelling in rainy season will be miserable, which is not the case! I travelled at the end of June into July and the rainfall lasted about 20 minutes at most and then it clears. I found most of the rain happened later in the day or overnight.
You did a lot of hotel inspections. What was your favourite and why?
Hotel Muse Bangkok. I am a big enthusiast for 1920/1930s-era designed hotels. The fact that their rooftop bar has a hidden passageway to get to it was amazing. A lot of thought went into the design and décor of the property. The rooms are very spacious. I definitely recommend this property for honeymooners. The area is quiet, but still close to major sights and shopping. The restaurants and breakfast buffet have a great selection to choose from.
What was your favourite unique stay?
X2 Kanchanaburi, I stayed in the Xfloat Luxe Cabin. These cabins float on the River Kwai. They are equipped with day beds on the rooftop and kayaks that clients can use during their stay. Very spacious suites with picturesque views of the sunset and sunrise.
As a Goway Asia Expert having sold Thailand for years, was there anything that surprised you?
Once you are in Thailand, everything is very affordable. I was shocked by how cheap and affordable everything was. From clothing to food, you could get by with spending a very minimal amount and be comfortable still. I always bring more currency than I need just in case, and I came back with half of my spending money.
What area would you recommend if clients wanted to extend?
Koh Samui and take a cruise out to Anthong National Marine Park. Going out to these islands is an excursion not to be missed if you like sailing and the beach.
Are there any tips about travelling to Thailand that agents might share with their clients to make their trip even more enjoyable?
Always bring loose-fitting clothes that cover your legs and shoulders. At some temples, and especially the Grand Palace, there is a dress code in effect. However, there are vendors around selling wraps or pants for 100 THB (Thai Baht) in case you forget. As well, you should visit Chatuchak Weekend Market. This is a fantastic market experience, either during the day or at night. I purchased some of my favourite pashminas from here that were made of silk for about 100 THB each. If you have clients that love to shop, this market is not to be missed.
I also always recommend to clients that they have a night cap at one of the many sky bars in Bangkok. Most hotels have one, but the best views are at Lebua.
Do you have a favourite local dish?
Red Thai curry with fresh crab is my absolute favourite. The combination of coconut milk, lemongrass, cumin, ginger, coriander and red chilies is amazing. Nothing beats authentic Thai curries. They are so much more flavourful than what you can get at your best Thai eatery in your home city.
