Goway Expert Returns from Southern Africa
Goway Africa Expert, Amber Cammish, recently returned from a trip to South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. Amber shares her insight into what she learned from this once in a lifetime experience.
What do you think is the biggest misconception about Zimbabwe?
There are always questions from travellers about safety. The politics of the country have very little effect on the national parks that our clients are visiting. The game lodges are connected by charter flights and the connections throughout the country are seamless.
What was your favourite hotel/lodge and why?
I loved Bumi Hills. Being on the lake is magical, with the colour contrast between the blue water, the green grass, and the deep red sand. The pool overlooks the lakeside where you can watch the elephants play in the water. The suites were perfect with outdoor showers and that fantastic view.
What was your favourite unique stay/experience?
Grootbos Forest Lodge. Walking through the Milkwood forest to get to your room set the scene for your stay. The dining is superb and the attentive staff made the lodge so welcoming. You feel connected to the reserve and its habitat.
As a Goway Africa Expert, was there anything that surprised you?
Staying at multiple lodges in the Sabi Sands, I was surprised how different each experience was based on the style of the lodge and their guiding teams. Savannah Game Lodge had multiple unique dining options, which kept the experience flowing throughout. Some lodges focused more on photography based on their guides’ experience while others were more honeymoon orientated. There is a great lodge out there for all requests.
What area would you recommend if clients wanted to extend into another country?
Zambia is right next door to Zimbabwe. Connected by Victoria Falls, they are easily combinable. Zambia is the land of the walking safari, and the South Luangwa is a great spot for taking to foot for a safari experience. The Lower Zambezi can offer canoeing and other types of adventures.
Are there any tips about travelling to Zimbabwe and Zambia that agents might share with their clients to make their trip even more enjoyable?
Do a variety of game experiences. 4×4 safaris are the standard, but take the opportunity to create experiences on the water by adding in a canoe trip, boat safari, tiger fishing, or a sundowner cruise. Walking safaris let you explore the surroundings in a hands-on approach.
Do you have a favourite local dish?
I love the prawn and seafood curries. I had them throughout the trip, on Rovos Rail, at Grootbos, and even at Thorntree River Lodge in Zambia. Each one was flavourful, with warm and gentle spices. They’re a great break from the heavy meat dishes while on safari.
